The R200 (oz) pure-gold coin celebrates “20 Years of Democracy” in South Africa by commemorating the first non-racial and democratic elections that were held in the country on the 27th April 1994. On the coin, Former President Nelson Mandela is portrayed with a group of voters standing in line.

Mr. Mandela was elected President and inaugurated at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on the 10th May 1994. He led a troubled country.

South Africa’s advent to democracy was ushered through the 1993 Interim Constitution, drawn up through negotiations among various political parties, culminating in the country’s first non-racial election in 1994.

All legally eligible South Africans were able to cast their vote for the first time on 27 April 1994 to mark the end of apartheid rule and establish a new Constitutional order.

27 April 2014 marked 20 years of democracy in South Africa, and this year we reached the 30 year mark!
